this is Roger Dean's eggshell-looking house. though it's not really made out of egg shell, it sure looks like it and probably as eco-friendly. it's called Home for Life and in the spirit of Arcosanti, it's part of the Willowwater village designed to be in harmony with the natural environment. more interior pictures here

first there was text, then images, then movies, now touch. CBS reports on virtual reality and touch. the playstation 2 game Rez comes with a "trance vibrator." it's a "music shooting" game....uh huh. or you can just get the vibrating mouse which is sound-triggered. at a Siggraph event a few years ago, i tried out a mouse developed by either SensAble or Immersion that could translate the feeling of various textured materials mainly through variations in vibrations. though it was very early in development, i still don't believe that you can mimic the real feeling of a texture through vibration/hardware unless it's wired into our brains. it's just way too hard to simulate what the biggest organ in our body - our skin - can do.

very good NYT article about transcranial magnetic stimulator, or TMS. it's based on the theory that suppressing one part of the brain will make room for improvement on another. it's the first real step in a neurological brave new world. as one can see, we've got to improve on designs of electrode wear. otherwise, i'm not going to walk around looking like that no matter how good my memory can get. smarter prosthetic arms are in the near future. Philip Kennedy is the first researcher to successfully implant and record signals from neural electrodes in humans. the documentary Beyond Human Senses, by Sanjida O’Connell, showed one of his quadriplegic patients "typing" sentences through thought. Kevin Warwick is working towards the day when we are all connected to each other through thought, while Stelarc explores extension of the human body. June 21, 2003

GFP plants, GFP amoeba, GFP fish, GFP mice, and a GFP bunny, and more, have been created in the name of art and science. however, glowing fish as pets is now a reality in Taiwan according to the Observer. glowing aquarium pets seem the most easily acceptable since the bioluminescent gene came from water organisms. this is just a primer for more designer pets to come: allergen-free & shed-free cats, mess-free parrots, you name it....even designer bacteria! this is the Turning Torso, a new residential building in Sweden, designed by my favorite architect Santiago Calatrava. it is due to open in Spring of 2005. his designs are inspired by anthropomorphic forms, aesthetically as well as structurally. i'm an avid follower of biomorphic design, as you can see from my amazon listmania list. there will be an exhibition about architecture inspired by animal forms, called Zoomorphic, at the Victoria and Albert Museum, in London, opening on September 18. yesterday was the opening of the 50th Venice Biennale. Francesco Bonami, the Director of the Venice Biennial, presents a NEEN DOGMA of PAINTING, written by Miltos Manetas, who started the neen movement. what is neen? it's not telic. what is telic?
"Telic is magic through technology. Telic is our relationship with the tools which help us to design the World and to see things in a perspective. Our times are Telic. But we want to see more Neen happen. Neen instead, is Telic that went nuts: you wouldn't believe that it's possible and even who makes neen cannot easily repeat it."

Shana Ting Lipton just announced that she put her latest write-up, "Art Imitates Life-Science," on her site. the topic is one of my favorites: the bio art movement, specifically an account of her experience at the festival L'Art Biotech. this is her with orlan, one of my favorite performance artists. her projects really challenge ideas of what's "God-given" and concepts of beauty. also in Shana's article are bio-art stars Joe Davis, Symbiotica, George Gessert, and Eduardo Kac.

telomeres.jpg

back in the late 90s, news about how telomerase is the answer for immortality exploded on the net and science magazines. so much that installation artists and painters addressed issues of immortality specifically based on this enzyme. basically, cell life is directly related to the life of telomeres and the presence of telomerase keeps telomeres from dying. Geron Corp. holds a patent on telomerase, even though they were not the first to discover its affect on cell aging. because of that, a research project to grow human arteries may not come to fruition. in this picture, the yellow dots are the telomeres at the ends of chromosomes.

what is up with all the news about cannibalism in recent years? according to Telegraph news two days ago, human flesh is being sold in black markets in North Korea due to the severity of the famine. perhaps Zhu Yu’s “Eating People” controversial performance is literally a commentary on man's dark tendencies. i found an outdated blog devoted to cannibalism, called Meat Box. this picture was taken today in japan, found on Yahoo. watch out for this jacket developed by Pioneer that sports a computer display on the sleeves. it has been in development for over 2 years and promises to deliver within another year. it utilizes the bleeding edge organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology that more and more companies are investing more research into. it was originally developed by Kodak and is now in its 3rd generation. an older version, not as cool-looking, of a jacketized computer was announced in 2000.
