![]() i knew of Lillian Ball's jewelry but just discovered her sculptural work involving projected animations. refreshingly, a different take than Tony Oursler's projected faces. in the piece called "Hover", you can see in the video, the form bends back and forth, distorts and hovers over the silicone rubber object as its spirited virtual counterpart. ![]() Dean Chamberlain and Tokihiro Sato have very similar techniques in that they both try to capture light itself as subject matter. both work in long exposure times and both have been doing this for decades. however, Dean Chamberlain runs around with a light while Tokihiro Sato uses mirrors. i met Mr. Chamberlain this last weekend and.... what an amazing guy! very into his work. i'd love to know about other photographers who also use light as a primary subject matter. ![]() Kevin Warwick, who implanted a silicon chip in his arm in 1998, is on to Project Cyborg 4.0. in Project Cyborg 1.0, he communicated with machines. in 2.0, he communicated with his wife (who also had an implant) via their nervous system. this will be tested in people with motor-neuron diseases for 3.0. though there is much criticism, i think he's got the right idea: "Talking is obsolete. It's an old-fashioned thing. We'll still do it for a while. But communicating by thinking... it's tremendously exciting." (via kurzeilAI) September 23, 2003 robodock permalink

![]() the winners of the first core77 challenge, of the theme "memory" are announced. some interesting ideas. the grand prize winner is of a movie polaroid camera (polaroids that use lcd instead of photo paper). finalists: an intelligent & sensing garden trowl, a digital networked dynamic tattoo, a digital time capsule that captures memories and can release them at a later time. some honorable mentions: a scent capsule that captures scents, an emotive biofeedback bracelet that plays generated music, electronic post-it notes based on location & situation, an implanted "birthmark" capsule for genetically modified individuals to store their original dna, an electronic dogtag. my favorite one has to be the digital tattoo. not a new idea, but a good one. i'd get it in a heartbeat when it becomes available. unlike the electronic ink tattoos (which has a patent now, or the bacterial tattoos or the digital pigment assistent, this one's networked. ![]() what was thought to be a sixth sense that bats have is actually their ability to navigate in complete darkness using their ingenious sonar system. a really great book called "Sensory Exotica" explains the bat's sensory system in detail. recently, bat calls have been successfully used in virtual environments to make auditory maps of space for navigation, soon to be at an augmented perception store near you. ![]() Peter Hill's robots are "female" because they have traits of cooperation and multi-tasking. based on this idea, they would make great caretakers for the home and of the elderly. whoa! that is the heaviest load of ******* i've ever heard of. why can't they just apply the traits without genderizing machines? on a similar note, the remake of the Stepford Wives is coming out next year, starring Nicole Kidman. ![]() bioengineers from Tufts University have identified how spiders and and silkworms spin silk, the strongest natural fiber known. the secret is in the solubility, concentration and structure of the proteins in their glands that spin the silk. this new insight could lead to new high-strength and high-performance materials, new biomaterial applications for cell growth in tissue engineering, environmentally sound processes to generate fibers and films.
