recycling plastic has never made sense until now, thanx to some smart folks at MIT. they did this by mixing hard and soft plastics together and compressing them in a mold until "the hard component dissolved into the soft component making it malleable and easy to remould."

whenever a company like Shell sponsors such "good" things like an aurora light show to "emphasise its commitment to renewable energy sources," one has to suspect they are on to something no good (to compensate or hide something else). this simulation of the Northern Lights uses lighting mounted on 40 trees around the river near the London Eye, sound & atmospheric sensor equipment, and a 43-metre wind turbine to blow mist around that will dissipate the light. a bit ironic with the usage of all this equipment. this will go on until mid-february. more photos

i always thought Lynn Fox, who made Bjork's Nature is Ancient video, was a woman. but according to Xeni, it's a group of guys and the company is called Lynn Fox. interesting.... anyway, their 3d work is unbelieveable if you haven't seen them.

Basso & Brooke's imagery is a cross between baroque cartoons, Hans Bellmer, and Francis Bacon. you can buy their "hot pads and tea towels illustrated with penises, eye masks quilted with illustrations of genitalia and picnic blankets splattered with ejaculation images" (via boing boing)

this was last year's news but new to me. Farrell Eaves, a 69-year-old retired security engineer and sometime photographer dropped his digital camera into a pond. after weeks of trying to dry it out in all possible ways, broiling, baking, blow-drying, and sun-drying, his camera came back to life in an unexpected way. the pictures he calls "magical" are somewhat painterly, flat, abstract, and distorted. colors are all tweaked and blurred into each other. his life was changed since then. he's been exhibiting his photos and even published a book of them.

mammals fart, like this whale that was caught on film. but fish? apparently, they do, for communication purposes. Fast Repetitive Tick (FRT) is what the biologists have called the sounds and air that emanate from the anus of herring fish. so that's how they communicate. in a way, we do the same, except that it comes from our mouth. read about it here. you can even listen to these FRTs. the Turner prize exhibition going on now at the Tate seems to be especially controversial this year. mainly because the vulgar Chapman brothers are on the shortlist. they were in the (even more controversial) Sensation show and also currently showing at the Saatchi gallery. however, Jake Chapman bites the hand that feeds him on bbc news.

the Light Blanket is an idea by James McAdam to help children who are afraid of the dark. the little patterned lights are motion-sensitive to create a happy glowing animation. it has 4 sets (ten surface-mounted LEDs per set) of colors and behaviors. see video of how it works.
