"Bloom: mutation, toxicity and the sublime" is a new exhibition in New Zealand that "explores art that has been made in relation to the impact of scientific experimentation on nature and human consciousness, and its representation in literature and film. The exhibition features 13 leading contemporary artists who respond to today's compelling and anxiety inducing issues of toxic environmental change, genetic engineering, mutation and the development of cybernetics." TRANSFIGURE is a new exhibition that "explores transformations of perception, body, movement, space and landscape to reveal tensions and wonder between technology and nature, identity and image." i got to experience Char Davies' Osmose and Ephémère - a very rare opportunity - and they are literally breathtaking. you navigate a very ethereal world via your body movements and breathing. i'd fly to austrailia to do it again and you should too. other artists in the show include Ian Andrews, Drew Berry, Paul Brown, Ed Burton, Justine Cooper, Chris Cunningham, Gina Czarnecki, Robert Gligorov, selectparks, Steina, Stelarc, Mike Stubbs, Tamas Waliczky, and Vikki Wilson.

the bare truth about hair is that hairlessness is a more evolved trait of human beings. but when and why did we start to evolve from the hairy ape to the naked human? there are two theories: either for cooling purposes or hygiene reasons. the more modern basis for hair and hairlessness is sex. with so much obsession with hair, why hasn't the hair gene been found yet? bisexual butterfly   permalink

the mimetic butterfly Papilio Memnon, aka The Great Mormon, is known for having a variation of characteristics. there is only one male form but the female comes in many forms, even having male characteristics. a "bisexual" one was bred recently. it probably resembles this one, which is an aberrant male cuz it has the white and red spots only known to be on females. it also looks like it has a bigger abdomen, another trait for females. adding to the expanding list of human homology that includes bacteria, corn, worms, fruitflies, rodents, is coral which shares 90% of its genes with us, 10% of that not found in the fruitfly or the nematode worm. this suggests that our origins are not just vertebrate-specific.

i went to the opening of *nano* at LACMA last friday and really enjoyed it. the nano installation itself was beautifully constructed with molecular walls and ceilings, as if you are in nano space. you can use your shadow to push the virtual shapes around and distort them in real-time. all the projects are very participatory. one project they seem to have forgotten to list on their website is Steven Schkolne's really cool project that you can use tongs and this block tool to build bucky ball inspired structures, flipping it around, adding points, pulling points, etc.

ok, everyone's doing it and it's hard to resist not passing these on. here are even more photos of trees doing weird things and people doing it to trees. almost all of these were culled from posts in the organism list that i'm on. also see my previous post on tree art. my favorites are still the beautiful photography of Yuri Dojc that Xeni posted on boingboing.

a five-millimetre-long fossil of an arthropod that existed 425 million years ago newly named Colymbosathon ecplecticos, for
"amazing swimmer with a large penis," was found recently. it is proclaimed to be the oldest male fossil ever found. the researchers used a "shave and photograph" technique to create a virtual model of the fossil, layer by layer. it has limbs for swimming and scavenging for food along the ocean floor. material convergence   permalink

the convergence of solar cells, computer chips, and LED lighting is now possible. after applying this new material into solar cells in the lab, the engineers at Ohio State U converted light into electricity at 17% efficiency (whatever that means) and created LEDs on silicon substrates comparable to the current versions of the super bright LEDs. [via]
Because III-V materials absorb and emit light much more efficiently than silicon, these materials could bridge the gap between traditional silicon computer chips and light-related technologies, such as lasers, displays, and fiber optics.
