'smart skin' is a new technology (still in research) intended to be integrated into clothing so it can monitor your health, sense touch and air-flow, and respond to heat - a "second skin". [ via ]

this plant's normal reaction to stressful conditions (like drought or cold) is to turn red or brown so this Danish biotech company genetically altered it to react only to nitrogen dioxide to detect land mines. [ via ]

this is the Bonneh Illusion, where, if you stare at it long enough, the yellow dots disappear sporadically. it demonstrates Motion-induced-blindness, discovered by Yoram Bonneh, in which static objects may seem to disappear amongst a larger moving pattern. the dots are always there but when your attention is focused away from them, you don't perceive them. this phenomenon is being used to study consciousness. entirely digital, Ray Caesar's portraits are highly imaginative and bizarre. i wonder if he's friends with Mark Ryden? tho they are similar in style, they are different in technique (painting vs. digital 3d) and sensibility. [ via ]

Christa Sommerer & Laurent Mignonneau's project A-Volve will be in the upcoming show eVolution. made in 1994, this installation allows visitors to create creatures (virtual) that evolve within an environment of a glass pool of water. the creatures will swim and behave based on its form and the forces of nature, as well as the interaction of the visitors' hands. "Form and movement are closely connected, the creatures capability to move will decide its fitness in the pool. The fittest creature will survive longest and will be able to mate and reproduce. If two strong creatures meet, they can create an offspring and a new creature can be born. It carries the genetic code of its parents. Mutation and cross-over provides a nature-like reproduction mechanism, that follows the genetic rules of Mendel. This newly born offspring will now also react and live in the pool, interacting with visitors and other creatures." hole in sky   permalink

a pillow is like an adult's teddy bear and now it can have arms too. you can do whatever you do with pillows *and* dress it up and sit it on your couch or bed. Single is its name and it's made by a fairly new design company in Vienna called Walking Chair. [ via ]

i saw the Lee Bontecou retrospective today. what a treat it was to see her work in person.... the 3-dimensionality of her wall pieces.... the intricacy of her explosive suspended sculptures.... very interesting hybrid animal forms.... visionary landscapes.... so many great pieces. i can see where Lee Bul, Sarah Sze, and others must've gotten their inspiration from. catch it at the MoMA in the summer if you can.

forget tattoos, the floral sculpture clinic would be the place to go to get subdermal bumps in floral designs. unfortunately, it's an art project. but Orlan and the Lizardman have paved the way so it's only a matter of time that putting designer bumps on our skin will be fashionable.

finally, art is officially important to the science community! a relatively new [cross-disciplinary] field of research called neuroesthetics will try to figure out what our brains do when we create/view art. their 3rd annual conference is entitled "Emotions in Art and the Brain" and it happens this saturday. Zack Lynch will be blogging it. January 5, 2004

from Heaven & Earth: Unseen By the Naked Eye: "The structure of an eggshell is revealed as a tangled network of mineralized fibres in this scanning electron micrograph at a magnification of 500 times. Eggshell forms around a mat of proteins, which is coated and overgrown by calcium carbonate and other mineral salts. The result is a tough, waterproof package that still allows gas exchange between the inside and the outside, enabling the developing embryo to 'breath', while providing astonishing mechanical strength."

it seems like synaesthesia is a popular interest lately. siggraph 2004 's art gallery has the theme of Synaesthesia. it's the topic of interesting journals. is it about perceiving rhythm combining senses? are synaesthetes people from the future? do normal people also experience synesthesia? if a computer was synaesthetic, could it be like this? this mushroom can give anyone synesthesia for a few hours.
